Guy Stuff, Girl Stuff
well, another day, another dollar… not really. to give an update, josh came to town last saturday. we partook in various activities, including bowling, leading worship, and eating a lot. good times were had, frisbee was played, and the fraternal order of things still existed even a few months removed. he has since left and there are three girls in my living room studying… so i guess it’s back to my estrogen filled life. even at the office, I have a female boss and two female co-workers. these interactions are not out of the ordinary for me, since i have affectionately been coined the “gay friend” by all the female friends I have. as josh left, so did any form of testosterone in my present life. I am so ready for some of my guy bible studies to start. although the kids will likely be 9th graders, at least we can talk about some “guy” things.
7:22
I attended 7:22 last night, a singles ministry in the suburbs of Atlanta. I have heard many things about it, I have seen the worship leader play before, and I have heard talks from the leader all summer at Passion on the Hill, but 7:22 was just not exactly what I expected. I had been warned of it’s overwhelming feeling, but I figured I would really appreciate tons of followers in one place. Although I do appreciate the numbers, it just seemed almost TOO big and too much of a production. For starters, this church is just gigantic, which is a great thing, but when you walk inside the stage is just overwhelming, screaming “Look up here!!! This is where your attention should be!!!” I noticed a lack of any traditional Christian symbolism, no cross, no pictures of Jesus or stained glass. Growing up not a Christian, that was one of the only things I really appreciate about christianity… the symbols. I am against worshiping anything that can be “idol-like” but the presence of these “icons” helps bring me into a place of worship and holiness. The band was a full 11 members, which is I believe the size of the Miami Sound Machine. It was a little odd to find that many musicians up there. In a studio setting, it could take that many musicians to record an album, but the wonder of a live band/show/performance is that it’s not EXACTLY like any studio sound. Todd Fields still did a great job leading worship, but it was different than the 3-4 people bands I have seen him in before. Louie Giglio’s talk was still as good as they have been, though I feel he has the tendency to over simplify and over dumb down the Bible. At an event like that, though, you have people from various histories, denominations, educations, and what not, so there’s not much opportunity to get real DEEP while still speaking the Word. Oh well. I am excited about Kairos, which is a spinoff of 7:22 with old 7:22 worship leaders and all. It is run by some people at my seminary and they have expressed excitement for me to get involved. I am ready to get fed… just gotta be patient.
