I am going to get controversial. I love doing that. Listening to the radio, someone was discussing the whole concept of gay marriage. Now, by faith, I definitely have my own views of the act itself. I am fairly unwavering on that. But when it comes to the role of government and the idea of “gay marriage,” it becomes a whole different issue. I heard a libertarian view today, which might have been one of the better arguments I have heard in a while. My view of government is definitely a separation of Church and State. Let’s look at the track record of Church and State: the Crusades, Islamic jihadists, The Medieval Roman Catholic Church (also involved in the crusades), amongst many others. But some people are thinking, “Well, those were people who used religion for their own personal gain.” Well, here’s an issue with that. Interpretation of religions has never been universally accepted. Say the Southern Baptists had the actual power of the state several years ago. They would have possibly passed a law to say dancing would be illegal. Do you see where the Church/State dilemma can go? Now, I must preface my position by the fact that I wish marriage never existed within government at all. Marriage was given to the church, but the state got involved somewhere along the line.
Here’s where a libertarian position starts being more universal and make more sense. The stance would be that as long as it doesn’t violate the rights of anyone else, it would be fair game. As weird as the situation would be, if there is a mutual consent, then it is fair game. With this stance, you have to ask the question, how does gay marriage violate my rights and how I live my life? I mean, I personally think God gave marriage for a man and a woman. Given that, its up to men and women to embody what a marriage should truly look like. But government looks at marriage as a contract. The government looks at marriage simply in terms of estate successions, medical power of attorney, etc. That’s their only role. They don’t make sure that the couple is currently practicing consensual heterosexual sex. Understanding that, gay marriage and civil unions are pretty much that same thing. Now, some may say, “Well, there you go, the can have civil unions, just not marriage.” Well, lets call a spade a spade. Either the government needs to refer to all marriage as civil unions or all civil unions as marriage.
Going back to the libertarian rights question, I have to say its a fairly decent argument. I feel, based upon my faith, that one day they will have to answer for their behaviors. I’m fine with that… I have to answer for my behaviors myself. But for those outside the faith, can I truly forbid them from practicing a sin that in no way violates anyone not involved in the consensual act? I mean, murder, stealing, lying, etc, all effect the rights of another who does not consent, but this is the practice of two knowledgeable adults deciding to partake in this act. Is it the governments role to enforce all areas of God’s law in all part of the culture, even to those who do not have the Holy Spirit? Should the government not allow anyone to get drunk, hookup outside of marriage, gossip, lie, etc? Yeah, I’ve heard of a government like that. Its the Islamic state, and that’s the slippery slope of church and state.
I am sure everyone has an opinion and I hardly explained my position really well. This is kind of a full essay topic. But a discussion is always good :).
